Nebraska defenders Pierre Allen, top, and Phillip Dillard pull down Kansas’ Toben Opurum in the third quarter of NU’s win on Saturday.

    Tracking the defense

    NU STAR

Barry Turner, out-matched a few times in pass coverage, made his presence felt often enough near the line of scrimmage. The senior defensive end had five total tackles, two of which were behind the line of scrimmage. He also had a quarterback hurry.

    HIGHLIGHT

Dejon Gomes had difficulty sticking with Kerry Meier all day, but the NU junior defensive back made a game-changing play in the third quarter when Kansas was closing in on a go-ahead score. Gomes poked the ball away from Meier and Nebraska recovered at its own 4-yard line.

    BUSTED PLAY

Cornerback Prince Amukamara blitzed, leaving receiver Dezmon Briscoe open on the outside. Before Turner and senior safety Larry Asante could converge, Briscoe pulled in an under-thrown pass and gained 28 yards on third and 14.

    OUR TAKE

Quarterback Todd Reesing, the first experienced signal caller the Huskers have faced in some time, gave NU all sorts of problems with his arm and his legs. The Blackshirts had been so dominant of late, the way they performed Saturday could almost be characterized as a disappointing effort. But they forced that key turnover in the third quarter and allowed zero points after Nebraska took its lead back in the fourth.
