LAS VEGAS — The Nebraska women’s basketball team showed that the Husker football team isn’t the only squad on campus with a strong defense.
The Huskers improved to 2-0 on the season by holding UNLV (1-1) to just three field goals in a 20-minute stretch en route to a 73-51 win on Sunday. During that span, NU drew six charges and blocked four shots without committing a foul.
Junior guard Dominique Kelley paced the Husker offense early, finishing with 17 points, including 12 in the first half. Yvonne Turner, a senior from Bellevue East, matched Kelley with a game-high 17 points by hitting three of Nebraska’s nine 3-pointers.
Senior forwards Cory Montgomery also scored in double figures with 14 points and Kelsey Griffin just missed her 21st career double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.
Nebraska outrebounded UNLV 44-37 while holding the Lady Rebels to six field goals in the second half. The Huskers shot 43.3 (26 of 60) percent from the field and held UNLV to 28.3 (15 of 53) percent shooting.
The Lady Rebels field-goal drought lasted 10 minutes, and then NU used a 9-0 run to push its lead to 20 in the second half.
