The Creighton women’s basketball team hit Davidson with a second-half barrage of 3-pointers on Sunday to take the fight out of the Wildcats.
Davidson had trimmed a 17-point deficit to 10 with 12 minutes to play. The Bluejays countered with a 20-8 run to regain control, and then finished off the 77-58 win with the last four of the eight 3-pointers they made in the stretch run before 816 at D.J. Sokol Arena.
In its two wins this season, Creighton has made 28 3-point shots.
The 15 the Bluejays made Sunday were one off the school record.
“We’ve shot the ball well,’’ Creighton guard Chevelle Herring said. “Hopefully, we can keep on trucking throughout the year.”
Herring made four 3-pointers against Davidson to finish with a game-high 20 points. Six other Bluejays converted from beyond the arc, with freshmen guards Ally Jensen and Jasmin Corbin combining to make 5 of 8 3-pointers.
“We have some really good shooters,’’ forward Megan Neuvirth said. “We didn’t know if we would all be on at the same time, but the last two games, we’ve all been hitting a few.’’
Neuvirth made two shots from beyond the arc in a 17-point, six-rebound, six-steal performance. Sam Schuett finished with 10 points as Creighton got off to a 2-0 start for just the second time in nine seasons.
The Bluejays built a 33-20 halftime lead by turning 16 Davidson turnovers into a 19-0 advantage in points off turnovers. They built the lead to 17 points early in the second half twice before the Wildcats rallied, pulling within 10, 44-34, on Julia Paquette’s three-point play with 11:59 left.
A 3-pointer by Herring ignited Creighton’s decisive run that saw her score 11 and Neuvirth seven of the Bluejays’ next 20 points.
Any hopes Davidson had of another comeback ended when Corbin made two 3-point baskets and Jensen and Katie Frank one each in the final five minutes.
“I’m a little concerned that we’re relying on that (3-point shots) too much,’’ said Creighton coach Jim Flanery, who has watched his team take 61 of its 132 shots from beyond the arc in the first two games. “I can’t really say we’ve taken a lot of bad 3s. We’re taking good shots for the most part.”
Paquette led Davidson (0-2) with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Monica Laune, a senior from Ashland, Neb., had five points and three assists for the Wildcats.
Creighton will try to start 3-0 for the first time since the 1992-93 season when it plays Thursday at Marquette. Flanery said he liked what he saw from his team in its two home wins.
“We’re deeper than I thought,’’ said Flanery, whose team last season relied extensively on Herring, Neuvirth and Kelsey Woodard for point production. “We don’t have to rely as much on those three as we did last year. I feel better about our balance.’’
