Dan Brown book to be discussed

“The Hunt for the Lost Symbol,” a documentary that explores how much of Dan Brown’s new novel “The Lost Symbol” is truth and how much is fiction, will be screened at the University of Nebraska at Omaha on Thursday evening, and its director and editor will lead a discussion about the film.

Brown wrote “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons,” which became major-release movies.

The discussion will be in Arts and Sciences Hall, Room 306, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. John Blizek, who directed the film, will lead the discussion just before screening the film.

The religious studies department and the Journal of Religion and Film are sponsoring the event.

Love, Shelterbelt style

The Shelterbelt Theatre will hold a public reading of scripts for “From the Shelterbelt With Love,” a romance-themed collection of skits presented each year leading up to Valentine’s Day.

The free reading will be at 7 p.m. Monday at North Side Christian Church, 5555 Larimore Ave. For more information, call the theater at 341-2757 or visit the Web at www.shelterbelt.org.

‘Little House’ tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for the Broadway touring production of “Little House on the Prairie, the Musical,” which will run Jan. 12 through Jan. 17 at the Orpheum Theater.

The musical is based on the television series that starred Michael Landon as Pa Ingalls and Melissa Gilbert as his younger daughter, Laura. Gilbert plays Ma Ingalls in the touring musical.

Ticket prices range from $28 to $58 and can be purchased at the Holland Center box office, 13th and Douglas Streets, or by calling 345-0606 or, toll-free, 866-434-8587.

Young jazz musicians sought

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is accepting applications for its 2010 Young Lions All-Star Band.

Students selected for the band will perform in concert with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and saxophonist Paul Haar on Feb. 5 at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln.

The band is open to musicians who are still younger than 22 as of Feb. 5. Musicians who play alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano or bass are welcome to apply. Students selected must be available to rehearse Jan. 31 and Feb. 4.

For an application, contact the band at 402-477-8446 or go to www.artsincorporated.org/njo. The deadline is Dec. 2.

New GM for Omaha Symphony

Angela Cassette, operations manager of the Omaha Symphony, has been promoted to general manager.

She succeeds Jennifer Barlament, who left the orchestra earlier this year to become executive director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in Michigan.

Cassette, 26, began her tenure with the Omaha Symphony in July 2008. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she studied violin with Carolyn Huebl. She completed her graduate studies at Arizona State University with Jonathan Swartz.

Her appointment as general manager is effective immediately. Among other things, she’ll oversee rehearsals and be involved in the hiring of guest artists and conductors. She’ll also assist with season planning.
