‘Twilight’ fans set for ‘New Moon’
From vampires to football, there’s plenty of variety at the movie theater this week. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” marks chapter two of the big-screen teen romance saga featuring vampires and a werewolf or two. Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson star. Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long voice the kid adventure flick “Planet 51,” and Sandra Bullock plays a wealthy Southerner who becomes legal guardian to a homeless football prodigy in “The Blind Side.”
Theaters rolling out their holiday shows
A crowded calendar of stage openings includes the classic “A Christmas Carol” at the Omaha Community Playhouse, the touring acrobatic-dance show “Cirque Dreams Illumination” at the Orpheum, the popular rock musical “Rent” at SNAP Productions and a reprise of 2008 holiday hit “God’s Trombones” at the John Beasley Theater. At SkullDuggery Productions, the Charlie Brown characters have grown up to be dysfunctional adolescents in “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.” Helen Keller’s story, “The Miracle Worker,” opens at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Sequels top list of video game releases
Who says sequels are worse than the original? Two video games beg to differ. “Assassin’s Creed II” and “Left 4 Dead 2” are this week’s major releases. And, as you can tell by their names, you can expect death and violence.
‘Moonlight’ becomes pianist Myer
Pianist Spencer Myer plays Beethoven’s most popular piano sonata on Tuesday at the Joslyn Art Museum. His program includes Beethoven’s “Moonlight” sonata along with music by Handel and Schubert. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is part of the 2009-10 Tuesday Musical Concert Series.
O’Leaver’s welcomes Lincoln garage band
Catch Lincoln garage rock group Brimstone Howl on Friday at O’Leaver’s Pub. The performance is in advance of the group’s fourth album, “Big Deal. What’s He Done Lately?,” which comes out Nov. 24 on California indie label Alive Records. The new disc will include a few old tracks re-recorded, in addition to several new ones.
‘Idol’ combatants now compete with CDs
This “American Idol” competition continues. Last year’s finalists Kris Allen and Adam Lambert release CDs this week. Allen, of course, won the title on the show. Other releases include John Mayer’s “Battle Studies” and a live Paul McCartney album recorded during his New York performance this summer.
‘Star Trek’ boldly goes out on DVD
Trekkers, get ready. The most recent incarnation of “Star Trek” comes out on DVD this week. Director J.J. Abrams reinvented the series, and Chris Pine stars as Capt. Kirk. Other major releases this week include Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Brüno,” “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard” starring Jeremy Piven, and Cameron Diaz in “My Sister’s Keeper.”
Jaroo features archived kid TV fare
Call it “Hulu Jr.” Jaroo is a Web site that has archived TV episodes, much like the popular Hulu site. But Jaroo is for kids, and it is chock-full of cartoons from 50 series. The most notable: “Inspector Gadget.” But there are plenty of other shows, too. Visit Omaha.com for a link.
