Editor's choice: Public toilets aren't a new invention. This photo was taken in the ancient ruins at Ephesus, on the western coast of Turkey. Allen Greenberg of Omaha perches on public latrines built in the first century. They were part of the Scholastica Baths. In the center was an uncovered pool with the toilets aligned along the wall. There was a drainage system under the toilets.
