Class C-1: Trick play sends St. Cecilia to title game

BROKEN BOW, Neb. — Hand out a big assist to the “dipsy doodle” for helping Hastings St. Cecilia advance to its first Class C-1 state championship game in nine years.

A trick play with the unusual name resulted in the winning touchdown in the third quarter on Tuesday, giving the Bluehawks a 14-12 state semifinal win over Broken Bow.

Until St. Cecilia's trick play, the game had gone just as the No. 6 Indians had hoped. They had eliminated big plays by St. Cecilia's offense and used lengthy drives to shorten the game.

But a double-reverse pass on fourth-and-14 resulted in a 27-yard touchdown by fullback Ben Konen with 7:00 left in the third quarter, and the No. 3 Bluehawks' defense made that 14-12 lead hold up.

“That was a great game when you think about it,” St. Cecilia coach Carl Tesmer said. “They're a good, good team. They gave everything they had.”

Adam Pracht sacked St. Cecilia quarterback Beau Schwenka on third-and-8 at the 21-yard line, setting up the fourth-down play.

Running back Dalton Sealey appeared to be going around the right side on a sweep until he handed off to split end Paul Goedert on a reverse. Goedert pitched the ball back to Schwenka when he reached the pocket, and Schwenka threw to a wide open Konen, who needed just one cut to get into the end zone.

Konen had gone out as a lead blocker in front of Sealey on the sweep and kept running downfield on his route.

“It's something we work on once a week,” Tesmer said. “We kept it in our back pocket until we needed it.”
