ALLIANCE, Neb. — Community volunteers were among those honored recently when the state held the 46th annual Nebraska Community Improvement Program awards banquet in Kearney.

Rita Fortner, Box Butte Development Corp. administrative assistant, said the NCIP awards reflect outstanding community and economic development projects based on volunteerism.

This year, 2009 Alliance High School graduate Megan Dimmitt was recognized with the Youth Leadership for Outstanding Service award.

“We had received several statements from teachers, peers and people that worked with Megan, which was a vital part of our decision in nominating her,” Fortner said.

Alliance took third place in the Governor’s Community Spirit category.

Among the projects that brought home special awards were Rosewood Estates in the Workforce Development Class IV Division and the Knight Museum New Harmonies Smithsonian Exhibit in the Arts and Humanities Class IV Division.

Fortner said Rosewood Estates involved more than 56 volunteer hours with 12 organizations donating supplies and time. Plus, Fortner said, it was the community’s first green project and gave local contractors some special training.

The committee already has several nominations in mind for next year.
