‘Clarinda Sings’ hits stage

Sunday’s “Clarinda Sings” will feature sounds from the 18th century, as well as traditional carols, folk songs and 1940s songs, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Clarinda High School Auditorium.

This is the 15th year for the holiday musical. It is sponsored by the Clarinda Foundation. Sherrill Lisle and Linda Krueger have been the directors since its inception.

Adult choir members from southwest Iowa will present traditional seasonal music and selections from Handel’s “Messiah.” Soloists will be Julie Karns and Heidi Bird.

The choir and soloist Chris Bontrager will be joined by the Clarinda Kids’ Choir for such numbers “What a Wonderful World!” and “I Wish You Christmas.” Other numbers will feature soloist Karen Guthrie in “Nothing Could Be Finer,” and the choir singing “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Ding! Dong! Merrily on High.”

Other adult choir members are: Elaine Armstrong, Teresa Babcock, Jourdan Beal, Carol Bellairs, Bonnie Brown, Marcia Coufal, Darlene Eglehoff, Guthrie, Shirley Joens, Yvonne Johnson, Janice Rahn, Nancy Rahn, Bev Shaw, Rachel Cabeen, Monica Dawson, Denise Hoskins, Bonnie Muller, Venita Muller, Becky Poen, Roberta Rarick, Gloria Schuelke, Nancy Stotts, Gretchen Sump, Norma Thomsen, Gail Wallin, Joe Drake, Bill Francis, Tom Ives, Kathleen Keefer, Robert Keefer, John Lisle, Katie Lowrie, Ron Richardson, Norm Schilb, Paul Anderson, Alan Bellairs, Lloyd Herzberg, David Lowrie, Robert Nassen, Brad L. Richards, Bill Richardson, Randy Sims and Dave Sperry.

The Clarinda Kids’ Choir is making its third appearance. The fifth- and sixth-graders under the direction of Katy Ridge will sing in the commons area during the intermission and will open the second half with “Joyful, Joyful” before joining the adult choir.

Two guests will perform this year. Tom Ives of Clarinda will be featured at the opening of the program with singing and guitar numbers from the 1940s. Sarah Davison from Nashville, Tenn., will open the second half. It is her third appearance.

Reserved seats are being sold at the Glenn Miller Birthplace office and the Clarinda Foundation office.
