Police chief to speak to business group
Omaha Police Chief Alex Hayes will speak Nov. 25 at a meeting of the Midtown Business Association.
The cost is $10 for the noon lunch in the Nebraska Medical Center private dining rooms.

Entries sought for story contest
Original short stories by Nebraska authors are being accepted for the 2010 Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation's short story contest.
Stories should be 1,000 to 2,000 words, and submissions should be written in the spirit displayed by Aldrich in her works.
Cash prizes will be awarded in adult, high school and middle school categories. The due date for submissions is the author's birthday, Feb. 17, 2010.

UNO sponsoring pair of concerts
The University of Nebraska at Omaha music department is sponsoring an artist-in-residence program through Thursday for master classes, clinics and concerts.
Jimmy Haslip and Peter Graves will give a big band concert featuring the music of Jaco Pastorius at 7:30 tonight in the Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. Tickets, available only at the door, are $5 for the public, $4 students and senior citizens and free to members of the campus community with a Mav Card.
At 3 p.m. Wednesday, Haslip and Graves will give a free concert in the Strauss Performing Arts Center.
Speaker to discuss cap-and-trade bill
Jim Conran, president of Consumers First Inc., will speak on cap-and-trade legislation at a meeting of Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom.
The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Millard Branch Library, 132nd Street and Westwood Lane.
Art gallery tour to benefit children
Eight Omaha art galleries have banded together to present a self-guided art tour from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Ticket sales will benefit children at Alegent Health's residential treatment center.
The galleries are Blue Pomegranate, Anderson O'Brien, Lewis Art Gallery, Dundee Gallery, JD Gerber Photography, Anderson Interiors, Gloria's Custom Framing and Leonardo's Art & Prints.

Designs to be shown for Florence library
You can see the architectural drawings and designs for the spring 2010 renovation of the Florence Library at a meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at the branch library, 2920 Bondesson St.
The public also will have a chance to meet members of the architectural group RDG Planning and Design and members of the Omaha Public Library Board, the City Planning Department and the library staff.
