Nov. 17: Winter wondering

Monday in Minnesota was sunny with highs around 50 degrees in places like St. Paul and Minneapolis. But more than six inches of snow fell in southeast Nebraska. Why?

A large band of high pressure settled over the Great Lakes and held back moisture-laden air that was moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico. Even Omaha benefited.

Because the metro area was on the outer edge of that high pressure system, most of the snow and rain couldn't push this far north. Instead it fell further south, with a fairly sharp line between the two systems.
