LINCOLN — As soon as Nebraska’s shots started falling, Idaho State didn’t have a chance.
The undersized and outmatched Bengals (0-3) hung around for 10 minutes Thursday night as Nebraska struggled to find an offensive rhythm. But the Huskers soon figured it out, ending the first half on a 24-4 run and making 10 consecutive field goals during that stretch.
They finished with a 49.3 shooting percentage — a figure they’d topped just twice last year — and won 88-41 in front of 2,141 in the Devaney Center.
“I liked a lot of the things we did on the offensive end tonight,” NU coach Connie Yori said. “Our execution was pretty good. ... I thought our motion was what we want. We utilized our inside-outside game.”
Idaho State committed itself to doubling Nebraska’s post players, allowing for chances on the perimeter. The Huskers eventually took advantage, making 10 of their 27 3-point attempts.
They’ve now eclipsed the 80-point mark twice this year, something they did in just two games all last season. And they’ve shot better than 40 percent in all three of their games this fall.
The difference is patience, senior Yvonne Turner said. She and her teammates are working defenses and finding open looks.
According to Turner, Yori told her players after Thursday’s game that none of their 69 shot attempts against Idaho State were bad decisions.
“(It’s) really just spacing and taking our time,” said Turner, who scored 14 points and was one of five NU players in double figures. “(Yori) just tells to slow down and spread the floor out. And we’ll get a good shot.”
After building its lead, NU wore down Idaho State with its depth.
The Huskers held ISU to 31.6 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers. Their bench outscored the Bengal reserves 47-12.
“Our style is kind of a wearing style,” Yori said. “We’re going to bring a lot of kids in, and we want to keep that pressure on, and maintain that pressure.”
But Nebraska’s depth in the frontcourt took a hit this week when Nikki Bober tore her ACL Tuesday in practice. The senior forward suffered the same injury last winter and missed all of the Big 12 season.
The Huskers will play Washington State at 2:05 p.m. Sunday in the Devaney Center.
