Temperatures are expected to drop Monday with the arrival of cold front. Although conditions could change as the holiday approaches, forecasters are projecting, at this early date, a chilly, although fairly benign Thanksgiving week in the Midlands.
The cold front is expected to slide down from Canada early next week, dropping temperatures across the eastern two-thirds of the United States, said Eric Wilhelm, forecaster for AccuWeather Inc., the World-Herald's weather consultant.
“It's going to be quite a bit colder than it has been,” Wilhelm said. Beginning Monday, highs are unlikely to climb out of the 40s in the Omaha metropolitan area, Wilhelm said. Until then, AccuWeather is forecasting daily highs in the mid-50s.
Cathy Zapotocny, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said a weather system moving through Monday night could bring rain or snow.
The storm bears watching, she said, because it's timing and path could affect people on Wednesday, traditionally the busiest travel day of the year. Zapotocny described it as a “medium-strength” system.
“There definitely could be some delays, depending upon how it evolves,” she said.
Wilhelm said he doesn't expect the center of the country to encounter difficult travel conditions. If problems develop over the holidays, he said, they're likely to occur on the coasts or from the Great Lakes region into the Northeast.
“I don't see a big snowstorm for anybody on the map,” Wilhelm said, However, he cautioned that projecting the weather a week or more out can be dicey.
