Dec. 15 vote set for Prague

World-Herald News Service

PRAGUE, Neb. — Some patrons of the Prague school district are trying to find a way to keep the district’s doors open.

According to Saunders County Clerk and Election Commissioner Patti Lindgren, 57 patrons signed a petition to bring a 50-cent levy override to a vote. Only 29 signatures were needed to get it on a ballot.

The special election is set for Dec. 15. Lindgren said it would be a traditional election, with the polling place at the Prague Parish Hall open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Lindgren said her preference would have been to do a mail-in election, but there wasn’t enough time to provide the 50-day notice required to hold one.

Lindgren said the patrons brought the petition to her and sought an election this year. The Dec. 15 date was the earliest it could be held and meet the required 30-day notice.

The Prague school board has said it would not seek another levy override. The district is operating under a 55-cent override that will continue through the 2010-11 school year.
