Need 100 yards of artificial turf?

In the market for 100 yards of artificial turf?

Hoping to buy a new Bluebird Vision 71-passenger school bus -- or some of that spongy stuff schools spread beneath the playground monkey bars?

The Embassy Suites Conference Center in La Vista was the place to get it today as 1,000 school leaders from across Nebraska met for the annual State Education Conference.

The latest products, services and educational approaches were on display at the conference, where Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and a guest speaker from Harvard University addressed a full banquet hall on the need for schools to engage parents in the education of their children.

Heineman called parental involvement "critical" and recognized four Nebraska school districts with Education Initiative Awards: Sutherland Public Schools, Cozad City Schools, Kearney Public Schools and Millard Public Schools.

The awards recognize exemplary practices in engaging parents, everything from Cozad's creation of a task force of K-12 parents to Millard's 4,000 parent volunteers and its efforts to enhance student success by emphasizing specific factors through the 40 Developmental Assets program.
