It's almost time for the Omaha Weavers and Spinners Guild's annual fiber arts show and sale.

Area artists will have handmade items, including rugs, scarves, painted silk, ornaments and more.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Westside Community Center, 3534 S. 108th St. Weaving and spinning demonstrations will be from noon to 3 p.m.

Bemis hosting exhibit, performances Monday

Some local artists will share their views on heroes at an exhibit and theatrical performance at 7 p.m. Monday. The evening will feature the work of adults with developmental disabilities.

The event will be the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, 723 S. 12th St.

The evening will begin with an exhibit of works in clay, fused glass, photography and watercolor. A theatrical performance featuring “Perseus and the Medusa” with shadow theater and Native American flute will follow.

Holiday boutique aids Meals on Wheels

You can shop for hand-crafted items Saturday knowing that proceeds from the event will go to the Meals on Wheels Program from the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging.

The holiday boutique will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ironwood Country Club, 12627 Pacific St. The work of 26 local artisans will be featured.

Events will benefit breast cancer research

Prairie Life Fitness Center, 2275 S. 132nd St., will be busy this weekend with activities to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help find a cure for breast cancer.

A wine and beer tasting on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. costs $30 per person or $50 a couple. Sign up by calling 691-8546.

Saturday will bring the fifth annual Racquet for the Cure, a racquetball tournament. A silent auction that has been running all week will end at 8 p.m.

A kids racquetball tourney will be held Sunday.

Friday last night to use UNL observatory

It's now or never: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Behlen Observatory near Mead will be open for public viewing 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, — the last public night this year.

If the sky is clear, visitors can view Jupiter and Uranus, two kinds of star clusters, double or multiple stars, and the Ring Nebula in Lyra. At 8 p.m., a member of the observatory staff will give an illustrated talk.

There is no admission charge for the public night. Further information can be found on the observatory Web site, http://astro.unl.edu/observatory, or by calling UNL astronomer Edward Schmidt at 402-472-2788. Maps to the observatory are available on the Web site.

See ‘The Nutcracker' Saturday in Fremont

The Oni Haa Academy of Dance and Movement in Blair will present “The Nutcracker” at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Kimmel Theater at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. Tickets are $7.

Butler County students present play festival

Students from the four high schools in Butler County will present a One-Act Festival of plays at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the East Butler High School gym in Brainard, Neb.

East Butler High School will begin with “Sort of Beowulf: A Sort of Comedy.” Rising City High School's production will be “Thank You for Flushing My Head in the Toilet and Other Rarely Used Expressions.”

“The Life and Death of Jesus” will be performed by David City High School. David City Aquinas High School will present “Property Rites.”

Donations at the door are $8 for adults; $5 for students and free for Butler County Arts Council members. All income at the door and at the refreshment table will go to one-act programs at the participating schools and to support the annual youth theater workshop and performance in June.
