Volleyball: Mavericks season comes to an end in loss

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- UNO was out hit in every set and lost to Washburn 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 Thursday in the first round of the Division II South Central Regoinal volleyball tournament.

The 23rd-ranked and seventh-seeded University of Nebraska at Omaha ended its season at 20-14, while the eighth-ranked and second-seeded Lady Blues improved to 33-4.

Kelli Goeser led UNO with 14 kills and a .224 attack percentage while Sara Kampschnieder had 13 kills. Emily Myers had 37 assists, Angie Reicks had 24 digs and Ellen Thommes had five blocks.

Thommes, slowed by a knee injury the past two weeks, had just five kills in 23 swings and also had five hitting errors for a .000 attack percentage.

Thommes ended her career with a .342 attack percentage, the third best in school history. She had a .388 percentage this year, the third best single-season mark at UNO.

Thommes finished 10th in school history with 1,282 kills and 1,608 points. She finished fourth in school history with 394 blocks and seventh with 440 total blocks.

On Thursday, Thommes was named first team All-MIAA. Reicks was named to the second team at libero, while Myers and middle blocker Lizzy Mach were named to the third team.

Myers, UNO’s sophomore setter, finished the season ninth in career assists at UNO with 2,348. Her 1,411 this year was the fifth-highest single-season total.

Four Washburn players reached double figures in kills, led by Lincoln Pius X graduate Mollie Lacy with 16. Another first-team All-MIAA selection, Lacy hit .448 for the match.

UNO hit just .105 in the match while WU had a .234 percentage.
