WASHINGTON -- The phones in Sen. Ben Nelson’s offices were lighting up today after he announced plans to support beginning consideration of the Senate health care legislation.
Several people called The World-Herald to say they were unable to get through, even to voice mail, when calling the Nebraska Democrat’s Capitol Hill office or any of his offices around the state.
A call by The World-Herald made it through to Nelson’s front desk in Washington, but it took multiple calls to get through to the Omaha office and calls to the Lincoln office resulted in busy signals.
Calls to the senator’s Scottsbluff, Kearney and South Sioux City offices all went to voice mail.
Nelson’s offices typically field a lot of phone calls and one caller had complained earlier in the week that she was unable to get through when calling Nelson’s Capitol Hill office.
Nelson wasn’t the only one with a busy phone line today.
Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., issued a press release noting that all of his offices will be open on Saturday "in light of the high interest and volume of calls" related to the health care vote.
