LINCOLN - The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the 60-year sentence given to a boy who was 14 years, three months old when he shot and killed 6-year-old Alazia "Lay Lay" Alford.
Jordan Goodwin is one of the youngest killers in Nebraska history.
He was tried in adult court, where a Douglas County jury convicted him of second-degree murder and use of a gun in the commission of a felony.
The killing occurred Oct. 5, 2007, when Goodwin fired at a woman who was taunting him. He fired at least five times and hit two women and Alazia, who was in a car driven by one of the women. The women had stopped in the alley to buy marijuana.
According to the court ruling, Goodwin was on the run from a treatment group home. He was living in a duplex with two unrelated adults. All three sold drugs.
The court rejected Goodwin's arguments that his case should have been transferred to juvenile court, that his statement to police was improperly admitted at trial and that the jury instructions were incorrect.
