Get a free pie when you give blood

This Thanksgiving season, the Red Cross is thanking blood donors with a voucher for a free pie, courtesy of Baker's supermarkets.

The offer is good at these special blood drives: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Faithful Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 2530 S. 165th Ave.; noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross, 2912 S. 80th Ave.; 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Baker's Supermarkets at 17370 Lakeside Hills Plaza and 13250 West Maple Road in Omaha and 3614 Twin Creek in Bellevue; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at Westroads Mall, in the storefront next to T.G.I. Friday's.

Events to celebrate National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day will celebrate its 10th anniversary Saturday.

The day is celebrated nationwide with hundreds of events.

In Nebraska, special events are planned in Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings and O'Neill. In western Iowa, events are planned in Council Bluffs and Sioux City.

DeSoto's art show, sale this weekend

The 10th annual “Art of the Wild” art show and sale will be this weekend at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge near Missouri Valley, Iowa.

The hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the visitor center. More than 20 exhibitors will display and sell woodcarvings, photography, gourd and feather art and other mediums.

Ty Smedes, an Iowa nature photographer and writer, will sign copies of his book “Capturing Iowa's Season” and present programs at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both days. Wildlife video “An Eagle Ballet” will be shown at 1 p.m. and “Things Worth Saving” will be shown at 3 p.m. both days. Omaha environmental artist Charlene Potter will do art demonstrations at 2 p.m. both days.


Blue Sushi hosting mental illness benefit

Before you kick back for your Thanksgiving, help raise money for the Nebraska Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

A benefit will run from 8 p.m. to midnight Wednesday on the top level of Blue Sushi Sake Grill, 416 S. 12th St., in the Old Market.

Have free drinks and hors d'oeuvres with the purchase of a ticket, which is $40.

Hartington's holiday celebration today

The Hartington (Neb.) Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for today's Candlelight Christmas.

In addition to food, music and events, the community will mark completion of work on the courthouse. Gov. Dave Heineman and State Sen. Cap Dierks will be at the 4 p.m. dedication of the newly renovated Cedar County Courthouse. Tours will be given until 8:30 p.m.

For the community holiday celebration, business open houses will start at 4 p.m. and there will be a chili and hot dog feed at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The main event, a lighted vehicle and machinery parade, will start at 7 p.m.


Help kids who lost parent to lung cancer

Family and friends of John Atkinson, an Omahan and nonsmoker who died of lung cancer in June, will hold a fundraiser tonight while raising awareness of lung cancer.

Dance to live music, enjoy appetizers, cocktails and a silent auction. Proceeds will provide scholarships to students who have lost a parent to lung cancer.

The event will run from 7 p.m. to midnight at St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church, 5050 Harrison St.
