Here are some things parents may want to tell their children to keep in mind:
Consider the circle: The Omaha Archdiocese teaches children about a circle of grace. Some things belong inside the circle. Other things don’t. When something inappropriate invades that space, children feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Children should trust that instinct.
Be proactive: If children wait to report abuse when touching starts, it’s probably too late. They need to know that an adult asking them to keep a secret, drink alcohol, look at pornography or some other inappropriate action is not OK. Those steps often come before physical abuse.
Gather grown-ups: Violators often tell children not to tell their parents. Establishing a team of trusted adults — teachers, family friends, church officials — could give children more outlets for sharing.
