FULLERTON, Calif. — Nebraska seniors Jordan Burroughs and Stephen Dwyer each won their bouts to claim titles at the NWCA All-Star Classic Sunday afternoon at a soldout Titan Gym.
Nebraska wrestled three Sunday in the events’ 44th year. Top-rated Burroughs defeated No. 2 Matt Moley of Bloomsburg 10-4 in the 157-pound bout, and 7th-ranked Dwyer upset Virginia’s 2nd-rated Chris Henrich 7-6 at 174 pounds.
Craig Brester represented Nebraska at 197 pounds, but fell to No. 1 Jake Varner of Iowa State, 5-2.
Brester and Varner battled to the final horn, but a Varner reversal in the first minute of the third period made the difference.
Iowa senior Daniel Dennis represented the No. 1 Hawkeyes with a title in the 133-pound match, scoring two takedowns in the third period to beat Maryland’s Steve Bell 9-8.
Nebraska continues its season Saturday at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y., where they will dual Binghamton, No. 16 Lehigh, Hofstra and Appalachian State.
