Old dogs and killer tricks

Here's something to be thankful for: New movies open Wednesday instead of the usual Friday this week to cater to Thanksgiving crowds. For martial-arts fans, Korean superstar Rain stars in “Ninja Assassins,” while John Travolta and Robin Williams play two well-aged guys taking care of 7-year-olds in “Old Dogs.”

When Hannibal met Santa

'Tis the season for light theater fare. Local stages continue to open their holiday season shows, including “Silent Night of the Lambs,” a Blue Barn Theatre spoof of the Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins murder thriller; “Christmas in New England,” the Circle Theater's adaptation of a movie screwball-comedy classic; and the comic-strip adaptation “Annie — the Musical” at the Rose.

Voices soar today at St. Cecilia

Cathedral Arts Project celebrates St. Cecilia Day in high style this afternoon with a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria in D major along with settings of the Magnificat. The performance coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Cathedral Choir. The free concert begins at 3 p.m. at St. Cecilia Cathedral.

Liszt on list at church recital

From Hungary with love. Teresa Walters was the first American pianist invited by the nation of Hungary to present concerts honoring the birthday of Franz Liszt. Walters will play some of her favorite Liszt knucklebusters at tonight's Crescendo Concert Series recital. The performance starts at 7 p.m. at Dundee Presbyterian Church. The concert is free, but tickets are required and available at the church.

Susan Boyle's encore: an album

Susan Boyle is hoping her 15 minutes of fame isn't up. The Scottish singer who wowed the world on “Britain's Got Talent” releases her first album Tuesday. “I Dreamed a Dream” features 10 covers — the Rolling Stones' “Wild Horses” is the first single — and two original tunes.

Marquee names on the home screen

Want to watch some big-name actors over the holiday weekend? You're in luck. Tom Hanks stars in “Angels & Demons,” Vince Vaughn gets festive in “Four Christmases” and Adam Sandler cracks jokes in “Funny People.” All three come out on DVD on Tuesday.
