Video makers get shot at fame

Aspiring music video makers, take notice: Monsters of Folk is looking for you. The indie rock supergroup — Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes along with Jim James of My Morning Jacket and M. Ward of She & Him — is sponsoring a contest to make a video for its song “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.).”

The winner's video will be posted online at the sites of Monsters of Folk, Apple/QuickTime and Death + Taxes Magazine. The winner also will receive $5,000, a signed Gibson guitar and a copy of the latest Final Cut Studio software.

Five runners-up will receive signed vinyl copies of the band's album.

The contest ends Jan. 1.

Auction gives Bemis a lift

The 11th Annual Art Auction at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts grossed more than $410,000 throughout the six-week exhibition and event, making it the most successful art auction to date there.

Nearly 250 international, national and local artists contributed 374 artworks for this year's auction. Last Saturday's live auction resulted in some major sales, including Claudia Cuesta's large neon piece “XY” going for $40,000, Paul Renner's painting “The Omaha Diner” selling for $15,000 and Roy De Forest's “Dog Man and Indian” fetching $9,100.

This year's auction added a new Cashcade component, which offered patrons an opportunity to directly support the Bemis Center's residency program through sponsorships and fellowships. The Cashcade feature generated more than $30,000 in direct support to resident artists.

An Irish spring in his step

Omaha dancer Ian Monaghan became part of the Saturday matinee of the Broadway touring show “Cirque Dreams Illumination” at the Orpheum Theater.

The Irish step dancer, born and raised in Omaha, was chosen from auditions the show holds in each city on the tour to incorporate a local dancer, singer, musician or acrobat into the show. He is a sophomore studying architecture at Metropolitan Community College.

Monaghan and his identical twin brother, Russell, have been dancing for eight years, studying at Bellevue Dance Academy and Craoi Na Tire. The latter is certified with the World Irish Dance Commission. Ian will participate in regional championships of Irish step dancing over Thanksgiving weekend.
