Officer injured in crash

BY Kevin Cole

An Omaha police officer suffered a minor injury early Sunday when his cruiser collided with another vehicle near 24th and Martha Streets while responding to a call for assistance from a fellow officer.

Officer Joseph Hall was treated at Methodist Hospital for an ankle injury and released, according to police department spokeswoman Lt. Darci Tierney.

The three occupants of the other vehicle, a Honda Accord, were all admitted to the Creighton Medical Center with injuries that Tierney said are not believed to be life threatening.

Jose C. Rivera, 53, was admitted with broken ribs. Daisy Carabantes, 42, was admitted with a head injury and Keyri Rivera, 20, suffered a spine fracture and broken clavicle. A hospital spokeswoman said no other information on their conditions is being released.

Tierney said Hall, a two-year veteran of the department, was responding to a “Help an Officer” call at 40th and Farnam Streets with the cruiser's lights and siren operating when the accident occurred about 12:15 a.m.

The cruiser was northbound on 24th Street and turning west on Martha Street when it collided with the Honda driven by Jose C. Rivera that was westbound on Martha Street, Tierney said.

Both vehicles were badly damaged. Witness statements differed as to which vehicle had the green light, Tierney said.
The accident is under investigation.
