CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Drivers of eco-friendly cars will soon get the best parking spots in two parking ramps in downtown Cedar Rapids.
The idea is to give special treatment to encourage the use of energy-efficient cars.
Sandy Pumphrey of the Public Works Department says the special parking designation might persuade a family to drive the hybrid downtown and leave the Hummer at home.
Cedar Rapids also plans to install electrical lines for charging stations in the parking ramps as the city gets ready for electric cars.
The Third and Fourth Avenue parking ramps were damaged in the June 2008 flood. Renovations are under way in the Third Avenue ramp and will begin soon on the Fourth Avenue one.
