Crawford shooting suit dismissed

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the mother of a 16-year-old boy fatally shot by police in 2007.

Pat Britton sued Crawford Police Chief Rick Thompson, game warden Dan Kling and the city last year. She alleged the shooting was the result of negligence and that the city failed to properly train its employees.

Authorities say Thompson shot Jesse Britton in a vacant Crawford bar after Britton didn't obey orders to lower a gun. Thompson and Kling had gone to the bar looking for the boy, who was a suspect in a string of burglaries.

The court ruled that Thompson and Kling are protected from such lawsuits because they were acting in an official capacity. It also determined they didn't violate Jesse Britton's rights and that the city isn't liable.
