The city limits of La Vista would expand a little if new annexations are approved by the City Council on Dec. 1.
The areas proposed for annexation are primarily industrial tracts, except for one residence, said La Vista City Administrator Brenda Gunn.
Major businesses include Rotella’s Bakery, Streck Laboratories and U.S. Cold Storage. The residence is home to two people but is better known as Haunted Hollow, a popular Halloween attraction.
The annexation targets are Brook Valley Business Park and Oakdale Business Park along Harrison Street from 104th past 110th Streets; and the Brook Valley II Business Park, Papio Valley I Business Park and Papio Valley II Business Park along Giles Road from 114th to 126th Streets. The home sits on a strip of land just north of Papio Valley I.
The first reading of the ordinance was Nov. 3, and the second reading with a public hearing was Nov. 17. Each time, the La Vista City Council voted unanimously in favor of the annexation. The third and final reading will be Dec. 1.
The city estimates the total valuation of the areas at just under $175 million.
“It is just part of our growth,” Gunn said. “We’ve got a long-range annexation plan, which we’ve approved, and that’s a part of that. This is just an area that we were ready to take into the city.”
After final approval, the city has up to a year to begin providing services to the annexed areas.
Gunn said the city has notified anyone who would be affected by the annexation, but she said little would change for those areas being annexed.
“The only thing that will change is when we start providing the services. When they call 911, they’ll get La Vista police instead of the sheriff.”
