Bellevue OKs Coreslab demolition

WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

The Bellevue City Council approved a trio of motions Monday that get the ball swinging on the demolition of buildings at the former Coreslab property.

With the first, the city hired Terracon Consultants to perform an environmental survey on the city-owned property at Fort Crook and Cornhusker roads. The survey is to learn whether hazardous materials are present prior to the demolition, a required first step, officials said.

The second motion was a request to seek bids for the demolition and removal of buildings on the property. The city was awarded a $1 million Nebraska Department of Economic Development grant, and the city will contribute up to $500,000.

The final action allowed Metropolitan Utilities District and Qwest Communications to disconnect services to the site at a combined cost of about $8,400.

Mixan said the city is hoping to have the cleanup done and the property ready for prospective developers by early May 2010.
