HARTINGTON, Neb. — The dedication of the Cedar County Courthouse complex addition last week unveiled a simple blending of the old and new.
“This project is clearly a reflection of the values and beliefs of the citizens of Cedar County,” Gov. Dave Heinemann said.
He complimented the new project, describing it as having done the best job for the rural community while keeping in mind the taxpayer dollars used to complete it.
He said the northeast Nebraska community took advantage of the space it had.
“We need more facilities like this where citizens help solve problems,” said State Sen. M.L. “Cap” Dierks of Ewing. “And we need more people like you to solve the problems of our nation.”
The 14-month courthouse project came in ahead of schedule and created, relocated or renovated 13 offices throughout the new and old courthouse complex.
When the initial contract was signed in March 2007, the project was to be completed for $1.2 million. The final price tag came in a little under $2.3 million. It covered many updates to the old building to make it more efficient, in addition to creating new office space while raising the security of the facility.
The four core offices that conduct the majority of county business were kept on the street level. An elevator was installed for easy access to the two upper levels of the complex.
“When we started this project, (the County Board members) emphasized two key words — communication and cooperation,” said board member David McGregor, adding that those two concepts were essential to the project’s success.
“It is my hope this improvement will serve the people of Cedar County for many generations to come,” said board member Frederick Pinkelman.
