Bennington fire being investigated

A two-alarm fire left an unoccupied rural Bennington home badly damaged early Sunday morning.

Assistant Fire Chief Ron Johnson of the Bennington Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters were called to 18320 Ida St. about 4:50 a.m. and found a two-story house engulfed in flames.

Because there are no hydrants in the area, the Omaha Fire Department sent a tanker truck and an engine company to assist the Bennington department in putting out the blaze. Firefighters from Irvington and Waterloo also responded.

Johnson said no one was injured and the fire was declared under control about 5:30 a.m. Johnson declined to estimate damage to the home, which he said appeared to be under renovation.

An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to determine the cause of the fire. — Kevin Cole
