Statutes change for elk hunting

LINCOLN — Panhandle landowners who want their land included in elk hunting zones next year will need to examine new Nebraska statutes.

Todd Nordeen of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says qualifications for landowner elk hunting permits are different from landowner permits for other big game.

He says the total number of elk permits in the Panhandle has increased, but the demand for landowner permits has increased significantly as well.

Landowners seeking inclusion in an elk hunting zone for 2010 should apply by Dec. 31. The deadline for landowner bull elk permits is in mid-May.

Landowners who have significant elk usage and who can meet other requirements will be considered for acceptance into the Panhandle elk zone.
