Football: Big 12 week in review

Players of the week

Offense: Texas quarterback Colt McCoy. The senior from Tuscola, Texas, completed 32 of 41 passes for 396 yards and four TDs in a 51-20 win against Kansas.

Defense: Nebraska safety Larry Asante. The senior from Alexandria, Va., had 10 tackles, caused a fumble and intercepted a pass in a 17-3 win against Kansas State.

Special teams: Nebraska punter Alex Henery. The junior from Omaha punted six times for a 45.5-yard average against KSU, including two downed at the 1- and 3-yard lines.

Here's the kicker

Nebraska's Henery is the clear-cut best combination punter/kicker in the Big 12.

But Husker fans who think Henery is a shoo-in as the all-league kicker probably haven't seen the statistics of Missouri's Grant Ressel.

The sophomore walk-on from Jackson, Mo., is the nation's most accurate kicker at 98.2 percent. He has made 35 of 35 PATs and 20 of 21 field goals. His only miss was a 43-yarder in a driving rain against Nebraska. His longest is 46 yards.

Henery's numbers are superb, too. He has hit 31 of 31 extra points and 16 of 19 field goals. His misses are from 43, 51 and 54 yards. His longest also is 46.

Or voters might go with Texas' Hunter Lawrence, who is 20 of 23 on field goals.

Hazardous duty

The Oklahoma offensive line is no place for those who fear injury.

OU center Ben Habern suffered a broken leg Saturday against Texas Tech and will miss the rest of the season. Habern joins guard Brody Eldridge and tackle Jarvis Jones on the sidelines for the season because of injuries. Guard Brian Simmons, who missed five games with a knee injury, returned to play against Tech.

Stat of the week

In national defensive statistics, Texas is No. 1 in rushing defense, No. 2 in interceptions, No. 3 in total defense, No. 3 in tackles for loss, No. 7 in scoring defense and No. 7 in sacks.

Quote of the week

OU receiver Ryan Broyles after a 41-13 loss at Texas Tech: “I'm really at a loss for words. We got outplayed more than anything. It's been a long season.''

Bits and pieces

KSU played the final 145 minutes, 27 seconds of the season without an offensive touchdown. ... A&M tailback Christine Michael's 97-yard touchdown run against Baylor was the longest play from scrimmage in Aggie history. ... BU hasn't scored a first-half touchdown in six of seven conference games.
