Some Husker fans have wondered if defensive coordinator Carl Pelini might be ready to become a head-coaching candidate, and the first of that speculation has arrived with the vacancy at Youngstown State.
It's too early to say if Pelini might be on the Penguins' list, but he does have the ties -- growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, and graduating from Youngstown State after attending Columbia University for two years.
The older brother of NU head coach Bo Pelini wouldn't touch it after practice today when asked if he might be interested at all.
"I'm not even thinking about that right now,'' Carl Pelini said. "I'm just kind of worried about Colorado.''
Some other items from practice:
- Carl Pelini said sophomore cornerback Alfonzo Dennard is progressing from a toe injury that kept him out of Saturday's game with Kansas State. "I think he feels pretty good,'' Pelini said.
- NU quarterback Zac Lee said Colorado is better than its No. 72 national standing in total defense. The Buffaloes are allowing 376.3 yards per game.
"I don't know if that number really does their defense justice,'' Lee said. "I think their defense is probably better than that number shows.''
- Freshman I-back Rex Burkhead, out since Oct. 12 with a broken bone in his foot, said he was surprised to be told last week he was cleared. And he admits being hesitant at first, although he shook that by Saturday.
"After I started running around I got a little more comfortable with it,'' he said.
