Ex-ambassador visiting Omaha

By Matthew Hansen
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

A former U.S. ambassador to Israel visiting Omaha today will discuss possible ways the United States can broker peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Martin Indyk, the ambassador to Israel during the Clinton administration, will deliver a lecture titled, “The New Administration — Making Peace in the Middle East” at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Thompson Alumni Center.

The speech is free and open to the public.

Indyk has considerable experience inside the oft-controversial world of Middle East peace negotiations. In 1993, he helped to broker the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan. Two years later, he was in Israel working toward an Israeli-Syrian peace treaty when then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated.

Indyk also participated in secret talks that eventually led to the disarmament of Libya.

He serves as the director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. During his speech, he’ll draw from material in his new memoir.
