Holiday celebrations across the Midlands

Compiled by Sue Story Truax

Start the season of “making spirits bright” with these post-Thanksgiving events:

Julefest in Iowa at Elk Horn and Kimballton: Friday-Sunday. For 30-plus years, this festival has celebrated all things Danish — food, gifts, crafts and more — plus horse-drawn carriage rides, Christmas music and Father Christmas. Contact the Danish Windmill at 800-451-7960 or visit www.danishwindmill.com for more information.

“Christmas Traditions” Celebration in Minden, Neb.: Friday and Saturday. The event boasts a large selection of activities that include Santa and Mrs. Claus, a free movie, crafts and activities for kids, a 5:30 p.m. Friday parade under the courthouse lights, a holiday tour of homes and the 64th annual “Light of the World” Christmas pageant performed on the downtown square. For a list of events and times, visit our www.MindenNE.org.

Light PLAY, A Celebration of Holiday Magic, at the Omaha Children's Museum: Starts Saturday at the museum, 500 S. 20th St., and runs through Jan. 3. The holiday light show will play several times daily, featuring lights and shapes that dance to favorite holiday tunes in an original arrangement by the museum's artist-in-residence, Joey Gulizia. Showtimes: 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays; and 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sundays. Member-hour show: 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Museum admission applies.

Elmwood-Murdock Holiday Extravaganza: Saturday's events begin with a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast and include a craft show, antique appraisal, events for kids, Santa's arrival, soup supper, 6:15 p.m. Knight Glow Parade, a holiday singalong and more. Events are in various venues in the Nebraska towns of Elmwood and Murdock. Got to http://www.elmur.org/ for a complete schedule.

Christmas in Atlantic: Visit Santa, drink cocoa and take a horse-drawn carriage ride from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in downtown Atlantic, Iowa.
