Men's Basketball: 7-footer lifts Shockers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Garrett Stutz scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and Wichita State grabbed an early lead Tuesday night and rolled to a 74-57 victory over Iowa in the consolation game of the CBE Classic.

Stutz, a 7-foot sophomore from North Kansas City, matched his season point total in the Shockers’ first three games with 7-for-8 shooting performance in a sizzling opening half. He scored 10 straight points in 3 minutes, 15 seconds. He hit his first two 3-pointers and had a steal during a 13-2 run that put Wichita State (2-2) in control. Toure’ Murry also had 18 for the Shockers.

Iowa (1-4) never got closer than seven points in the second half. The Hawkeyes got 18 points from Cully Payne.

Stutz, who was 1 for 5 for only two points the night before in a 68-55 loss to Pittsburgh, came off the bench at the 15:13 mark and made his presence known immediately with a putback that gave the Shockers a 17-14 lead. In the second half, he did not come off the bench until the Hawkeyes had made their run and got within seven points, and he did not score until he worked inside for a layup that made it 63-50 with 6:51 to go.

Payne scored six points in a quick second-half getaway for the Hawkeyes and Eric May’s 3-pointer made it 49-42 after about 5 minutes. But that was as close as Iowa could get.

While Stutz carried the Shockers in the first half, Murry took over in the second, scoring 10 of his points. Graham Hatch had 14 points for the Shockers on 4-for-6 shooting.

Hannah, Wichita State’s leading scorer last season, made his first appearance of the year and had five points and six assists.
