SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis won't stay on the West Coast to recruit as planned after the Fighting Irish play at Stanford. Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday during a taping of his Chicago radio show that Weis will fly back with the team.
Weis had said Sunday he planned to stay on the West Coast recruiting, just as he had last year when he and Swarbrick met to discuss his future after the regular-season finale at USC.
Irish's Clausen punched
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was sporting a black eye behind the tinted visor he wore to practice Tuesday.
According to a university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the matter, Clausen was punched outside a South Bend bar early Sunday morning.
Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said Clausen was the “victim of a sucker punch.” He made the comments during a taping of his Chicago radio show.
“He was not engaged in a fight. He didn't throw any punches. He didn't directly engage the individual,” Swarbrick said.
Two KU players back Mangino
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Two players defended embattled Kansas coach Mark Mangino on Tuesday as an internal investigation into claims that he mistreated his team entered its second week.
“We look to him to see how he reacts, and the way he's handled everything has been an inspiration to us,” safety Darrell Stuckey said. “To see him go out there and be mentally tough — everything he's preached to us about being mentally tough, to see him live it out means a lot.”
Wide receiver Kerry Meier said he and some other players have been interviewed in connection with the probe. He said he gave his coach his full support.
“College football is a tough game, and everything that comes with it is tough as well,” Meier said. “If you're going to try to get something done, a lot of times you're going to have to raise your voice and say some things to get people moving.”
Vol reinstated; charges dropped
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says freshman safety Janzen Jackson will be allowed to return to team activities immediately and will start Saturday at Kentucky. Jackson was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted aggravated robbery on Nov. 12 at a convenience store.
Jackson's teammates, Nu'Keese Richardson and Mike Edwards, also were arrested. Prosecutors dropped all charges against Jackson after determining he did not know about the robbery beforehand and did not know anything happened until after the trio left the store. Richardson and Edwards are still facing three charges of attempted armed robbery. Kiffin dismissed them from the team Nov. 16.
