    Strange times at CU

Filed by Mitch Sherman at 2:25 p.m.

Things are getting weird out in Boulder. A Denver TV station, KCNC, reported last night that Colorado coach Dan Hawkins emerged from a meeting this week with CU Chancellor Phil DiStefano to inform assistant coaches he would return next year to lead the Buffs – regardless of the outcome Friday against Nebraska.

Hawkins, 16-32 in four seasons, is under fire as Colorado enters the season finale against the Huskers at 3-8 and 2-5 in the Big 12.

Now, the Denver Post is reporting that Hawkins was given no such assurance from the chancellor.

A spokesman for the chancellor, according to the newspaper, confirmed the meeting between Hawkins and DiStefano but described it as a review and said the decision on Hawkins' future would be made by Athletic Director Mike Bohn. Bohn is in Hawaii with the CU basketball team.

Stay tuned. It might be an interesting weekend in Boulder, with the Huskers' visit – at least from the CU perspective – only to serve as a sideshow.
