Man died of exposure after crash

WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

SCOTTSBLUFF — An autopsy has determined that a Gering man died of exposure after being involved in an accident late Sunday or early Monday.

The man has been identified as 49-year-old Shawn O’Donahue, Scotts Bluff County Deputy Attorney John Childress said.

A jogger found O’Donahue’s body in the street on 25th Avenue, police said Monday. Police found his vehicle in a retention pond northeast of the Menards store near 21st Avenue and 20th Street.

Police estimated that water in the retention pond was 3 to 4 feet deep.

Investigators believe that O’Donahue was driving at a high speed when he missed a curve on the street. His vehicle went over an embankment and landed in the retention pond.

O’Donahue apparently climbed up the embankment and collapsed where his body was found. The autopsy determined there were no signs of trauma or internal bleeding.

Childress said toxicology tests are pending.
