OAKLAND — A pedestrian who died Tuesday after being hit by a car veered onto the road and fell in front of the car.
The pedestrian — a man authorities still were trying to identify early Wednesday morning — died at the accident scene, according to the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office.
The accident was reported about 9 p.m., near the southern edge of Oakland, in the 600 block of South Highway Street.
Sheriff Jeff Danker gave this description of the incident:
A 19-year-old woman was driving north in a Buick LaSabre and noticed a man attempting to run along the side of the road. She said the man appeared to be staggering. As her car approached, the man veered onto the road and fell in front of her car. She was not able to stop and ran over the man. She and another driver stopped and called 911.
The man was pronounced dead as a medical helicopter arrived to transport him to a hospital.
Danker said an autopsy was being conducted this morning at the state lab in Ankeny. The man, who authorities said was Hispanic, carried no identification other than a name on a piece of paper.
The driver will not be cited in the accident, Danker said.
