Craig Petrich isn’t a magician, but he turned his broken thumb into toys.
After the 12-year-old broke his thumb playing football for the Spirit League of Papillion, he got an idea for a way to raise money for charity.
Craig offered to let anyone sign his cast for a $1 donation.
The seventh-grader at St. Gerald Catholic School in Ralston was inspired to help others by his 16-year-old brother Derek’s stories, said their mother, Cindy Petrich of Papillion.
Derek attends Omaha Creighton Prep and through school volunteers with the children at Ambassador Omaha, a care center that has a long-term pediatric unit.
Craig chose to buy toys for the children at Ambassador with the $35 he raised.
Using coupons and watching sales, his mother helped Craig buy children’s costume jewelry, a kid-friendly CD player and a pint-sizes plastic grocery cart. That will hold an oxygen tank, she said, allowing a child who needs one to become mobile.
The Petrich family also includes husband and father Gary.
