Should the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy be preserved? Or should it be abolished? Two speakers will offer competing perspectives on the issue Thursday at a 7 p.m. forum that is free and open to the public at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Speakers will be James Bowman, a resident scholar at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, which applies Judeo-Christian moral principles to issues of public policy, and Alex Nicholson, founder and executive director of Service Members United, the nation’s largest organization of gay and lesbian troops and veterans.

Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 has awarded funding to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska at Omaha for separate efforts aimed at pollution prevention. UNL will receive $71,300 for its Partners in Pollution Prevention program. UNO will receive $101,350 to enhance the capacity of its Pollution Prevention Resource Information Center. UNO’s center is one of eight national centers for the dissemination of pollution prevention information. Both schools will provide matching funds.

The College of St. Mary Christmas concert will be presented in the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Octarium, the CSM Chorus, CSM Singers and Musica Sacra will perform. A reception will follow in Hillmer Art Gallery. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Donate a canned food item and receive a half-price ticket.

The Public Relations Student Society of America named the University of Nebraska at Omaha chapter its Outstanding Chapter at the group’s recent 2009 National Conference in San Diego.

The North Platte (Neb.) Community College Foundation has received a check for $1 million to create the “Oliver, Mildred, Marguerite, Mary and Albert Durbin Scholarship Fund.” Oliver Durbin, who died in 2008, was a proponent of continuing education and the college. The scholarship was designed to help students who have financial needs due to family circumstances.
