Women's Basketball: Mavs feed on miscues by Aggies

The University of Nebraska at Omaha women’s basketball team won its first game of the UNO Thanksgiving Classic with a 71-28 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.

The Mavericks outscored the Aggies 40-17 in the first half and 31-11 in the second to improve to 2-2. OPSU dipped to 2-4.

The Aggies turned the ball over 42 times and the Mavs scored 35 points off OPSU turnovers. The Mavericks forced 26 turnovers from steals, with freshman Jamie Nash accounting for a career-high six.

The Mavericks took a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes and controlled the game from there, building a 23-point lead at the half.

UNO freshman guard Jessica Zaruba had 16 points, four steals and six rebounds. The Mavs’ Ashley Nelson finished with 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Alyssa Green scored 11 and tallied four steals.

UNO freshman guard Paige Frauendorfer scored a career-high 10 points. She also had three steals, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists.

UNO will play Chadron State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Kaitlin Petri scored 26 points, making 11 of 14 attempts, and had nine rebounds, five steals and four assists in the Eagles’ 60-51 loss to Southwest Minnesota State earlier.

Chadron (0-2) led 28-21 at halftime and was ahead 41-34 with 14 minutes left before Southwest Minnesota outscored the Eagles 15-0 during the next eight minutes to grab a 49-41 lead. The Eagles missed six field-goal attempts and had six turnovers during that span.

Also for the Eagles, Alyssa Lyman added nine points, all on 3-pointers, and Bobbi Arends grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots.
