Advent Service: A solemn Advent evensong and benediction will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Barnabas Anglo-Catholic Church, 129 N. 40th St., to mark the first Sunday of Advent. Music for the season will be featured. A reception will follow. The service is free and open to the public.

Living Nativity Scenes: The Christmas story will come to life in living nativity events at many area churches this season. A sampling:

Holy Cross Lutheran Church: Animals will greet you outside the church at 4117 Terrace Drive (in Maple Village between Maple and Fort Streets) and the living nativity will be held inside. Refreshments, entertainment and fellowship will be part of this free event next Saturday and Sunday. Starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont: “Back to Bethlehem” will be a drive-through event Dec. 13 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont. The 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. free event includes a live nativity scene, a variety of animals and bright spotlights. The church is at the corner of Lincoln and Military Avenues; cars should enter from Military.

Faith Christian Church in Omaha: “Come See the Light” will be the theme for the program at Faith Christian Church, 2210 S. 132nd St., on Dec. 12 and 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The drive-through living nativity scene is designed to depict all the sights, sounds and scents of the birth of Christ in the manger.

First Christian Church in Council Bluffs: Hundreds of volunteers will re-create the journey to Bethlehem at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs. The town will be complete with the nativity scene, angels, wise men, shepherds, Roman soldiers, live animals, a synagogue, an inn and shops filled with dozens of merchants. The event will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and next Saturday and again Dec. 11, 12 and 13. Admission is free. The church is at 20794 Iowa Highway 92.

St. Paul Lutheran Church & School: Members from St. Paul Church & School will dress as angels, shepherds and the three wise men to tell the story of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem. The Dec. 12 event, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., is free and open to the public, though a free-will donation will be taken. The church is at 5020 Grand Ave.

St. John Vianney Catholic Church: A luminary path will light the way to St. John Vianney Church's manger scene Dec. 12 and 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Stop inside afterward for hot chocolate, cider and goodies. The church is at 5801 Oak Hills Drive (south of 126th and Q Streets.)
