LIVESTOCK

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher with slaughter bulls trading firm to 1.00 higher. Slaughter steers and heifers not tested. A large offering of replacement females was on hand for the afternoon Special. Quality was mostly average with a few consignments of top quality bred heifers and young bred cows. The bulk of the afternoon sales consisted of 2nd stage young to middle aged bred cows due to calve starting in February. A light offering of feeder cattle sold, but not nearly enough to establish a market or quote prices. Compared to last week, another light test of feeder cattle and calves sold steady to 4.00 lower. Sellers remain uneasy about marketing their cattle in this down market, plus wet conditions additionally curbed receipts. This resulted in a light and uneven offering that made it hard for buyers to fill orders. There were only a few consignments that intrigued bidding enough to test the full market value, and even then there were not enough for a load. A much larger run is expected next week. Supply included 56 percent steers, 35 percent heifers, and 9 percent feeder bulls. Around 53 percent of the light offering weighed over 600 lbs.
