COUNCIL BLUFFS — With more red light cameras installed in September, Council Bluffs police say more citations have been issued and more people have been asking about how the cameras work.
Sgt. Pat Toscano of the Police Department’s special operations unit said the number of tickets issued in October jumped to 2,800 with the installation of cameras at three more intersections. Before that, citations from the cameras at five intersections had been running about 1,000 per month.
The new cameras were placed at the intersections of 30th Avenue and South Expressway, Kanesville Boulevard and Harrison Street and 25th Street and West Broadway.
The original cameras were installed on West Broadway at Eighth, 16th, 21st and 35th Streets and at the intersection of Seventh Street and Willow Avenue in August 2005.
Red light violators have to pay $107.25, which reflects the current state fine, surcharge and court fees for running a red light and being caught by an officer.
Previously the fine was $65, which matched the state penalty when the program began four years ago. Since then, the state has increased the penalty twice.
