Screening for depression offered
To gauge your emotional health or that of a loved one, take advantage of National Depression Screening Day Thursday.
Attendees can complete a brief questionnaire and learn about the symptoms of depression, as well as how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk. The program, offered by Aspire Counseling Services, also offers the option of talking to a health care professional.
Screenings will be offered from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the office in Terrace Plaza, 11414 West Center Road, Suite 233. For more information, call 502-5030.
Event will offer STD, HIV testing
The Omaha Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will host “Dare to Know Your Status: A Redirection of Health Reflection” on World AIDS Day.
The event, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, will be at the Omaha North High School Viking Center. HIV and STD testing will be provided.
Attendees also will receive information on diabetes, hypertension, cancer, nutrition, cardiac conditions, pulmonary problems, suicide prevention, weight management, blood donation, fitness programs and sickle cell anemia.
Volunteer training for family center
The Domestic Violence Coordinating Council will provide free training to people interested in volunteering with the soon-to-open Family Justice Center.
Training will be given from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 10 and 11 at the Douglas-Sarpy County Extension Office, 8015 West Center Road, Rooms A and B. Registration is due by Monday at the council, 398-9928 or dvcc@dvccomaha.org.
Musical in honor of World AIDS Day
“A Lullaby for Ryan: The History of HIV/AIDS in America,” a solo musical comedy written and performed by Jade Esteban Estrada also will commemorate World AIDS Day.
The musical begins at 7 tonight at Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha, at 819 S. 22nd St.
Before the performance, three youths affected by HIV/AIDS will share their stories of living with HIV and AIDS.
The event is wheelchair-accessible and appropriate for ages 13 and older. The $10 general admission cost will benefit kids affected by HIV/AIDS at Camp Kindle in 2010. For reservations and information, call 415-8769 or visit www.getjaded.com or www.diamond-foundation.org.
The performance will be offered a second time at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nebraska Union Auditorium at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 14th and R Streets. Tickets are $10 for the public but $5 for UNL faculty, staff and students.
Museum welcomes Band of Brothers
A former football and baseball teammate of Jackie Robinson's and prosecutor of Sirhan Sirhan will be one of the Band of Brothers veterans welcomed this weekend to the Strategic Air and Space Museum near Ashland, Neb.
Buck Compton is one of six World War II veterans featured in Band of Brothers. He commanded the 2nd Platoon of Easy Company in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne.
Doors open at 8 a.m. Saturday with a book-signing and autograph session to begin at 9 a.m. A Q&A session starts at 10 a.m. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
The stories of these veterans were chronicled in Stephen E. Ambrose's best-selling nonfiction book and the HBO 10-part miniseries.
These men will share their stories: Compton, Don Malarkey, Babe Heffron, Ed Mauser, Earl “One Lung” McClung and Ed Tipper.

Workshop to beat holiday stress
Forewarned is forearmed, the saying goes, and it applies to the season, too.
A workshop “Holiday Stress: Proactive Ways to Deal with Holiday Expectations” will be presented from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Servite Center of Compassion, 74th Street and Military Avenue.
