    Which direction will KU go?

4:40 p.m.: Now that Mark Mangino has officially walked the plank at Kansas, who will succeed him?

Don't be surprised if A.D. Lew Perkins makes a hard run at Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. Even with a retooled contract, Harbaugh's pay is only half of the $2.3 million Mangino was making.

Other possible candidates: Houston's Kevin Sumlin, Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora and Texas A&M offensive coordinator (and former KU quarterback) Nolan Cromwell.

Also, remember this in coaching searches.

After a bad experience, those who hire often swing the pendulum entirely the other way. So after having a gruff and distant coach accused of being hard on his players, perhaps a soft-spoken man who treats his players like his own offspring could have a chance. Someone like Turner Gill.
