Eagles use 3s to unlock Panthers' zone, roll

LOGAN, Iowa — Logan-Magnolia matched Underwood's defensive intensity early on Friday, but it couldn't keep up with the Eagles for four quarters.

Underwood used a 12-2 run at the end of the second quarter to grab a seven-point halftime lead, then held the Panthers to only two field goals the rest of the way while cruising to a 59-31 victory.

The Eagles (3-0) opened up an aggressive Lo-Ma zone by knocking down five 3-pointers in the first half, then penetrated and crashed the offensive glass at will from that point on.

“That's kind of our thing,” Underwood coach Andy Vanfossen said. “We're not very big, but we have some guys that can knock down some shots. It's just a matter of consistency. When we can hit those shots, it does open up some driving lanes and get some easy buckets for us.”

Tyler Hamilton paced the Underwood attack with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He had seven of his points during the decisive run at the end of the half that allowed the Eagles to pull in front to stay.

Levi Ettleman finished with 21 of Lo-Ma's 31 points on the night and had 13 of his team's 18 in the opening half. He hit a 3 to stop a 7-0 Underwood surge early in the third quarter, but the Panthers (1-1) had just one more field goal over the final 14 minutes.

Both teams struggled to score early in the game and began bombing away from outside the arc. The squads combined to go 9 for 21 from 3-point range in the first half, which accounted for 27 of the 43 total points before the intermission.

Underwood kept its lead above 20 in the closing minutes despite going just 4 of 20 from the free-throw line in the game, including 3 of 12 in the final period.
